Get Some Lovin You Want Some Lovin

A little dash of late summer awesomeness.

Liberty City – “Some Lovin'”

Thanks for the tip-off, Jenn.

Ceee-Lo – “Fuck You”

And for more Ceee-Lo goodness, check out this track from Estelle.

Estelle – “Pretty Please (Love Me)”

This Oversight Shall Pass

In light of the two inventive videos OK Go did for “This Too Shall Pass,” it’s pretty shocking that they were completely shut-out of the nominations for this year’s VMAs. Bad, MTV. Bad.

They’ve been encouraging their fans to do videos of their and the one below is pretty amazing. How long did it take this kid to pull this off? Wow.

in William’s Orbit

William Orbit has another ambient techno album coming out in the UK and a little online research unearthed some late 80s/early 90s remixes he’d done.

This one is by Propaganda. I’ve never heard it before. But I love it. And of course, can’t find it anywhere.

Propaganda – “Heaven Give Me Words (Honey in Heaven)” William Orbit Mix

And because I’m handy like that. Here are some other winners.

Shakespear’s Sister – “Run Silent, Run Deep” Revolution Mix (Someone help me find this one!)

Peter Gabriel – “Kiss That Frog” Mindblender mix

He of course went on to produce Madge’s Ray of Light, but his earlier remixes for her are among my favorites of his work. Especially the two tracks below. These songs proved a hard nut to crack for many remixers, and Orbit’s versions have became the quintessential reinterprations.

  “Erotica” (Orbit Remix)

  “Justify My Love” (Orbit Mix)

disco treasures

So I’ve just finished an absolutely amazing book about Disco and its influence on American culture (which I’ll write more about later) and there were a host of artists mentioned that i’d never heard of.

Denise LaSalle was apparently in the “tough talkin’ mama” mold of seventies soul…and in my youtube hunt I tracked down this insistent little disco number (that I of course can’t find anywhere else) from 1980, obviously trying to cash in on all the “disco kewpie dolls” that had become so popular. I dig it actually.

Denise LaSalle – “Try My Love”

And speaking of soul legends and their transformations during the 70s/80s. Check out this Pointer Sisters track (always a favorite of mine) that was on the B-side of one of their early 70s singles. Love it.

Pointer Sisters – “Send Him Back”

The Last Beat

So this track was used in my favorite SYTYCD number this year.
Apparently it’s territory Liev Schreiber already covered since it was used in his film of Everything is Illuminated.
This reminds me of KDLang/Roy Orbison’s “Crying” for some reason.

Devotchka – “How It Ends”

And ohmygod, ohmygod, ohmygod. They’ve done a cover of one of my favorite Siouxsie & the Banshees’ songs:

Devotchka – “The Last Beat of My Heart”

Here’s the brilliant Siouxsie original for reference:

Robyn’s Baby

I know it’s a Swedish folks song but does anyone else think the last track of Body Talk Pt 1 sounds like that la, la, la song from Rosemary’s Baby.

  Just a thought.
