Iglesias Aronofsky NIN Lynch

Did you have any idea that there would be some cross-pollination between Enrique Iglesias and Requiem for a Dream? The Latin singer goes full on Aronofsky with his druggy POV new video for “Turn The Night Up.” Looks like someone took too many happy pills.

In a “collaboration” that’s more of a natural fit, check out the David Lynch directed clip for the new Nine Inch Nails song. Positively seizure-inducing. Just listen if you can’t take the visual.

donkeyboy and fleetwood mac – closer than you think

These Donkeyboy characters are full of surprises. So before Silver Moon they put out a record in 2009 and dadnabbit if this song doesn’t sound positively Fleetwood Mac! A much different sound from “Drive” and “City Boy” (hello guest? female vocalist). Anyone else think this sounds like “Everywhere”?

Donkeyboy – “Sometimes”

Fleetwood Mac – “Everywhere”

u the hottest bit*h in this place

Just like last year’s “Call Me Maybe,” this is this year’s most covered song with parodies (reversed genders, military themed?) and alternate versions splattered all over the internet.

But wait, this is BY FAR my favorite. Love all the keyboard and the vocals are awesome.

Jay Stolar – “Blurred Lines”

charlotte’s Veins: SYTYCD face-off

SoYouThinkYouCanDance is usually good for an off-kilter routine set to some song I’ve never heard of.

This track by Charlotte Martin reminds me a lot of Mirah’s “The Garden” from a few seasons ago and was my first SYTYCD music purchase of the season. At turns spooky and sweet, tiny then expansive. It hits a lot of emotional notes in a short period of time.

Charlotte Martin – “Veins”

Doesn’t hurt that i’m kind of in love with the dance as well.

But wait, what’s this? It was apparently done on the Canadian version of SYTYCD, and frankly – way better. O, Canada!

Alan may be way dreamier but I guess our Northern neighbors come by their royal heritage much more easily. O Canada!

Enrique Turns The Night Up

OK, it’s totally derivative and the lyrics are totally lazy — In fact the chorus sounds alarmingly like his last huge hit, “I Like It” (Isn’t the snippet around 2:20, in fact, directly from that song?) And this isn’t even the real video, but some sort of instagram-baiting ad campaign. But I’ve been listening to this song non-stop for the last 2 days. I expect the burn out rate to be high…but for now, I’m sort of in love and can’t be stopped. I’m not embarrassed! Well maybe a little.

Late July Spotify Playlist

It’s time for another Spotify playlist, this one called “Elevate” after the excellent new St. Lucia song (which has a scatty fake synth horn bouncing around its ending like something out of Rod Stewart’s “Love Touch.”) Here’s that video to get you started.

And here’s the new Spotify playlist….follow/like/share accordingly. 🙂

Arthur Russell’s Telling You

So I finally saw Keep The Lights On, the film adaptation of Portrait of the Addict as a Young Man. While I had my misgivings with the movie, I was grabbed by the music which consisted entirely of Arthur Russell tracks.

I’ve certainly heard of Russell but the film sent me on a google rabbit hole where I connected lots of dots about the producer/musician, who apparently died pretty much broke of AIDS in the early 90s.

The film pulled mostly from his more minimal, experimental tracks. But checking his history, some of his earliest recordings grew out of the underground NYC dance scene and were reworked into some of the most seminal dance tracks of the early 80s, including this one which was tweaked by Larry Levan and I’ve heard countless times (and sampled all over the place) but never knew the origin.

Loose Joints – “Is It All Over My Face”

Now this group, Loose Joints, was formed in 1980 with Russell and two others and they set out to make the “disco” White Album. Of the music they recorded, only “Face” (which honestly i don’t love), a track called “Pop Your Funk” and “Tell You (Today)” were released. For me, “Tell You” is the total gem and a real find.  Love the shifting structure. Love the build. Love the crazy horns and that sweet little whistle and vocal that evolves from this marching beat. Can’t get enough of it!

Loose Joints – “Tell You (Today)”

Bright Light Bright Light and Donkeyboy

I am completely and utterly obsessed with these two 80’s tinged tracks. Driving with the top down euphoria.

Bright Light Bright Light – “Love Part II”

Donkeyboy – “Drive”

Kitchen Radio Launches!

So the AMAZING Lady P (Jenn Pennington) and I have tried our hands at a new lil’ radio show that you can check out on now on SoundCloud.

We met years ago in Seattle and quickly bonded over our love for music – before rekindling our friendship back in NYC. In honor of Pride month, our first show focuses on the role music played in our coming out experiences and how it helped shape our identities and informed our relationships. And who doesn’t like a thoughtful discussion on what constitute a gay anthem! I promise a fun trip down a musical memory lane, along with some new tracks you’ve hopefully never heard before.

We recorded it on a Saturday afternoon in Jenn’s West Village kitchen (right before Pride weekend) over a bottle of rose — doesn’t get gayer than that folks!

The show’s a work in progress but expect more episodes in the future. We’d love to hear what you think.

You can listen to the show here.

And check out the first episode accompanying Spotify playlist! (of course)
