this is how we do it in manhattan

this is pretty bananas. thanks for the tip-off, Kenny.

Azalia Banks – “212”

Mistadobolina

Oh Del, you are one funky homosapien indeed!
Used to LOVE this song back in the day and this Friday is just the right day for its resurgence.
Enjoy!

Del tha Funkee Homosapien – “Mistadobolina”

George Clinton + Public Enemy+ Prince

UNDERAPPRECIATED!!! This song George Clinton/Public Enemy did absolutely zilch when it came out in 1989. And the album version was sort of annoying with 80s style production. But this 12″ mix (which apparently was the single version too – smart) was remixed by none other than Prince and at least made it sound like it came out in 1990.

Good stuff! And rare too. It’s slow to load but be patient.

Uffie

Sounds to me like what Annie or Robyn or some Nordic chanteuse would sound like if they were produced by Pharrell.

Funky and Icy at the same time. Like if Khia was a frigid, checked out, suburban white girl.

Uffie f/Pharrell – “ADD SUV”

EuroKanye

I wrote back in June here about this fun littly Belgian song that was a big Euro hit. Stateside dance successes can be a tricky proposition but looks like Kanye dropped in on a remix of the track that will surely help it reach the American masses.

Stromae f/Kanye West – “Alors On Danse”

New Kid Cudi

Cudi’s ‘hip-hop of isolation’ has totally opened up on this track from his forthcoming album. The ghostly beats are gone. And the new beats (and guitars) are downright pop. The Kanye rap sounds sped up to me…. Could he be pulling a Prince, a la “U Got The Look”? Or is this just a cracked out pre-release version. Regardless – Me likey!

Mahogony Brown

This reminds me of early NYC days.

I was living in Brooklyn, the music industry was spending loads on promo videos (though they all somehow looked exactly the same), and George Michael/Wham! was being sampled in hip-hop songs.

Dissapointed that this edited version replaces “fu*k” with “rock.” And what happened to those lovely ladies of Total.

  Foxy Brown f/Total – “I Can’t”

Juicy Gotcha Krazy

And speaking of some old school hip-hop, I was absolutely OBSESSED with this song back in the day. First there was “Supersonic” . And then there was these. These ladies only last 2 albums I think (interesting note: Tata Vega, who did the vocals for “Shug Avery” in The Color Purple was the rap group’s featured vocalist on their second album) and were part of the MC Hammer crew. And boy can you tell by the video.

This song’s single version was also smoothed out and made more pop. Pretty sure the original album version had a bunch of dudes screaming the chorus. Very “Wild Thing.” Not pretty. (Where can i find the single version in the video below??? Grrrrr.) Chorus duties on this version were handled by Miss B Angie B, an MC Hammer protege who put out a pretty solid soul/new jill-esque album in 1991 that I loved. Where’d you go girl?

Love the intro.

Oaktown’s 3-5-7 – “Juicy Gotcha Krazy”

Monie Love

What ever happened to this delightful British hip-hopper?

I think we all first remember her from this Queen Latifah track that really knocked me out – I was ALL about my Freshman year. That’s a big Stratego set, ladies! (And by the way – does anyone know where I can get the single version featured in the video below. The album version doesn’t have the hook. And my 12″ LP is in some crate in Arizona.)

“Ladies First”

Remember when hip-hop videos looked like a day-glo Fresh Prince of Bel-Air intro?

“Monie in the Middle”

And remember this one from Boyz n the Hood?

“Work It Out”

And then there was this offering which, oddly, was a Prince production…and definitely sounded it. I was THRILLED but not sure how excited everyone else was….her chart hits sadly dried up after this.

N.A.S.A.

What in the world is NASA? I haven’t a clue but they seemed to have rounded up the hottest guest spots in any track around: Kanye, Santogold and my fav (tho it took me a little while to warm up) Lykke Li [N.A.S.A f/everyone i just mentioned – “Gifted”]
